History. I-80 was included in the original plan for the Interstate Highway System as approved in 1956. The highway was built in segments, with the final piece of I-80 completed in 1986 on the western edge of Salt Lake City.
I-80 ends its 306-mile-long (492 km) journey through Iowa over the Mississippi River on the Fred Schwengel Memorial Bridge. It enters rural Rock Island County, Illinois, and continues toward Chicago, Illinois.
Interstate 80 is an Interstate Highway in the United States. It goes from San Francisco, California east to Teaneck, New Jersey (just outside of New York City). The route is 2,919.596 miles (4,698.634 km) long, making it the second longest Interstate Highway in the United States behind I-90.

While Eisenhower initially allocated $26 billion for the project, building the Interstate System ended up being $425 billion and took 35 years to complete. However, over the years, many states have added to the system by constructing national highways and beltways around cities to reduce congestion and traffic.
The Midwestern sections of I-90 were fully completed in 1978, and most of the route between Seattle and South Dakota opened by 1987. The final section, near the western terminus in Seattle, opened in September 1993; an eastern extension in Boston was completed in 2003 as part of the Big Dig project.
Completion of the southern segment within the Free State followed by the mid 1960s. Interstate 81 within Pennsylvania opened in segments between 1960 and 1976. Within New York, Interstate 81 was established in 1957, with construction completing the route between 1967 and 1969.
Sections of I-10 were under construction in the Lone Star State between 1959 and 1982. Early emphasis was on completing the freeway through and between San Antonio and Houston; this was mostly done by 1968 and completely by 1972. In West Texas, much of the construction occurred in the 1960s and 1970s.
