Additional Financial Aid Resources

Students who submit the FAFSA may be qualified for subsidized or unsubsidized Stafford loans, or parent plus loans. For more information on each loan type, visit our Financial Aid page.

Direct Subsidized Loans are for students with financial need. The school will review the results of your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and determine the amount a student can borrow. Students are not charged interest while in school at least half-time and during grace periods and deferment periods.

Students are not required to demonstrate financial need to receive a Direct Unsubsidized Loan. Like subsidized loans, the school will determine the amount a student can borrow. Interest accrue (accumulates) on an unsubsidized loan from the time it is first paid out. Students can pay the interest while in school and during grace periods and deferment or forbearance periods, or students can allow it to accrue and be capitalized (that is, added to the principal amount of your loan). If students choose not to pay the interest as it accrues, this will increase the total amount that must be repaid because the student will be charged interest on a higher principal amount.

Parents of dependent students may apply for a Direct PLUS Loan to help pay their child's education expenses as long as certain eligibility requirements are met.

Grants are funds that are not repaid and are funded by federal, state or university sources. Grants are awarded based on need. Funding is available on a first come, first served basis.

Eligibility is based on the FAFSA and is determined by the U.S. Department of Education. Students attending full-time (12-18 hours) or half-time (6-11 hours) are eligible.

The SEOG is available on a limited basis to full time (12-18 hours) students with exceptional financial need as determined by the FAFSA.

Available to full-time (12-18 hours) undergraduate students who have financial need. Eligibility is based on the FAFSA.

All students are encouraged to submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) in order to qualify for university scholarships, external scholarships, grants, and student loans.

Students may begin applying beginning Oct. 1, and must submit the FAFSA each year. The electronic FAFSA process takes 3-5 business days.

In addition to submitting the FAFSA, students must have submitted an application and been accepted to the university in order to see which awards they will qualify for.

Note: Recent change to the FAFSA make it easier for families to submit their applications sooner. Families may now submit the FAFSA beginning Oct. 1 instead of Jan. 1, and will use tax return information from two years prior. This means that families will no longer have to wait until they have filed their income taxes to file their FAFSA.

Example: Students filling out a FAFSA for the 2023-2024 school year will use 2021 tax returns.

Tuition for the University of the Incarnate Word is the same for domestic, Texas residents, and international students. Students who are not eligible to submit FAFSA may instead submit the Texas Application for State Financial Aid (TASFA).

UIW offers students a Tuition Payment Plan option, which allows students to divide payments into installments. It is the responsibility of the student to enroll in a payment plan each semester. Enrollment into this plan may include an enrollment fee. Payment plans are set up through the Business Office.
